Trending Upward

The season is young, but so far I like the trends I see…

  1. Derrek Lee has as many home runs so far in 2008 than he did through June 1st of last year. We need to see the D Lee we know and love – Gold Glove .300 hitter with the ability to take the ball out of the park under any conditions.
  2. Kosuke Fukudome is answering a lot of questions with his quick start in the Majors. The numbers are self explanatory (.421 BA, .542 OBP) but his clutch hits are what this team sorely needs. On Saturday he took a 3-2 pitch to the opposite field for a tie-breaking clutch Double in the seventh inning. This guy is a professional hitter, looks like the Real Deal. Domo, Kosuke!
  3. Kerry Wood has closed out 3 of the past 4 games in dominating style.  Now re-read that sentence – Wood pitched three of the past four games in a dominating way!  We are always waiting for the other shoe (elbow?) to drop with Woody but I like the trend so far.
  4. Carlos Zambrano has a 12:1 strikeout to walk ratio in 13 2/3 innings with an ERA of 1.32.  If he can keep the ball over the plate for “good” strikes, he should be collecting some hardware the end of this season, such as a Cy Young trophy.

It’s early, but the ’08 Cubs are trending upward…
