Time to slice Pie to AAA

With lefty Scott Eyre due to come off the DL tomorrow, someone will have to leave to make room. The team has been hugely patient with Felix Pie but maybe its best to let him go down for some work on the farm that is out of the spotlight of the big league club.   There [...]

3 bombs for Votto and no plunking?

As a youth 32 years ago, I sat in Wrigley and watched Mike Schmidt blast four home runs in a game. It was Cubs vs Phillies April 17, 1976 and the Cubs lost 18-16 in a crazy wild game. Perhaps as rare as Schmidt’s 4 home runs was a mid-70′s Cubs team knocking lefty Cub-killer [...]

SI Cover Story Curse or not?

Since release of the current issue of Sports Illustrated featuring Kosuke Fukudome on the cover, I’ve heard more rumblings about the existence of the cover story curse.  The Cubs team is 3-5 since the April 30 release date (May 5 cover date).  However Kosuke Fukudome is batting .320 in that span, going 10 for 31 with 3 doubles.  So… [...]

Lou is not messing around

I have to say I like the impatience Lou Pineilla is showing this season. Its clear by his actions (are reactions) that he intends to win this year and will not tolerate sub-par performance from his players. Rich Hill is the latest to experience this having been dispatched to AAA Iowa following his last start. [...]

Is Chad Fox the best we can do?

I like a good story as much as anyone. But Chad Fox has been out of baseball for two years – maybe there is a good reason for that? As I recall, he wasn’t much of a player when he was young & healthy so why would there be any reason to believe at age [...]

When did Jason Kendall become Pudge Rodriguez?

Last year, catcher Jason Kendall threw out something like 2 of 50 baserunners trying to steal. That’s a 96% failure rate. But even as aggressive as Lou’s boys have been on the base paths this year, for whatever reason they don’t run on Kendall. Why is that? With the dozens of Cub baserunners in the [...]

Soto-riffic.

On Tuesday this week Geovany Soto broke his 8 k’s in a row string but left 3 on base in critical situations, going 2 for 4 on the night.  Then on Wednesday he cashed in with two 3-run homers. So I ask, how about consideration for Soto and Kosuke Fukudome for 2008 NL Rookie of the Year honors?  [...]

April Powers

The Cubs flashed some serious lumber in April, historically a terrible month for this franchise. In fact, the 2008 Cubs’ 17 victories in April is most in team history. Check out these numbers… 17 wins – first place in the NL Central .630 team winning percentage (#2 in MLB) 171 runs scored, averaging 6.3 runs [...]
