He always had confidence but had to prove it to the coaches because of his diminutive size. Many were surprised when LSU Baseball Coach Skip Bertman granted Ryan a baseball scholarship. Again he "performed above expectations." They did not think that he would live up to the standard of LSU's NCAA National Championship baseball that was the measuring stick for the Tigers when he entered college.
