Wrigleyville Ready to Erupt

The Cubs Magic Number stands at 2 going into today’s action. Any combination of Cubs wins and Brewers losses that equal 2 clinches the National League Central Division Championshipfor the Northsiders!  When that happens – likely over the next couple days (as predicted here on Aug 29) – The Chicago Lakeview neighborhood known as Wrigleyville will [...]

Soto and Lee clutch, Brewers done

With 2 outs and down by 4 in the bottom of the ninth yesterday, the Cubs rallied to tie and eventually won the game in the 12th.  Further evidence this is not your father’s Chicago Cubs ‘lovable losers’ team.

Final Homestand Update

The Cubs open their final regular season homestand at Wrigley tomorrow with CC Sabathia going up aganist Ryan Dempster.  Demp has been murder at Wrigley, going 12-3 with a .290 ERA so far in 2008.  With Milwaukee wilting and their clubhouse now in disarray with the firing of manager Ned Yost, you have to like [...]

Ned Yost Out as Brewer Manager

Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin has fired manager Ned Yost as of today. This move is long overdue for the free-falling Brewers team, now in jeopardy of winning the Wild Card.  Yost has long been seen as kind of an odd duck kind of manager so this is not really a shock to me. The guy [...]

Zambra-No-No

Carlos Zambrano became the first major leaguer whose last name begins with a Z to throw a no-hitter. He also is the first to throw a no-hitter in a rival’s ballpark where neither team were the home team.
I was 7 years old in 1972 when both Burt Hooten (in April ‘72) and Milt Pappas (Sept. [...]

Finally, a decision!

The Cubs and Astros will play Sunday night at Miller Park in Milwaukee at 7:05pm. Game two of the series will be at Miller Park Monday at 1:05pm.  The Astros will bat as the home team.  Game three will only be played if there is any playoff consequence. If necessary, they will play September 29th.
