Cubs Off-Season Review

If you don’t already monitor Tim Dierkes’ MLBtradeRumors.com, you should. He does a great job running down the leads, suggestions, rumors, and wishful thinking on roster moves for all 30 major league teams.

Just posted is their Cubs Off-Season Review, which takes a fair look at the changes made from last year to this and offers some solid analysis.

True to say Jim Hendry has added on payroll as much as any team, but I like how Dierkes breaks down where the money is going – mostly to increases called for in existing contracts. I would guess – especially if new ownership takes hold during this season - that Hendry will be able to add payroll in July if this team does what everyone expects it to. There will likely be more payroll dumping by clubs thatare out of the race by the trade deadline, so picking up a, say, Jake Peavy for half a year might be very attractive to a team looking solidly toward October baseball.
