Beginning of the end for Santo Era
It is looking like the beginning of the end of the Ron Santo Era. Cubs legend and radio color “analyst” Ron Santo announced he is limiting his broadcast schedule on WGN AM720. He will forego the coming West coast series in Seattle where the Cubs will face the Mariners in inter-league competition. Then he will [...]

Pat Hughes tells his favorite Ron Santo story
Last spring Pat Hughes, the Voice of the Chicago Cubs sat down for an exclusive interview with CubHub.net. I asked him to share his favorite Ron Santo story. Of course it is about the the early April road trip to New York to play the Mets at old Shea Stadium – a place Ronnie despises. [...]

Cubs.com or Powerball.com?
I went to Cubs.com, the official website of the Chicago Cubs yesterday and was surprised by the page that loaded. Gone was the Cubs-branded backgound, replaced by the Illinois Lottery’s Powerball game advertising. What is up with THAT? I mean, sponsorship is a necessary element of MLB and of course the Ricketts family are certainly [...]

The Pat Hughes Interview revisited
Last spring, Pat Hughes was kind enough to do an interview with me for CubHub.net. With opening day looming, I think it’s worth re-visiting the interview again this year…
Just as the Cubs opened spring training camp 2009, Pat Hughes, the Voice of the Chicago Cubs on WGN Radio was kind enough to take some time [...]

Michael Jordan at Wrigley Field
Here’s a little something for your enjoyment. A friend on Facebook posted this YouTube video of Michael Jordan playing in the 1994 Cubs-Sox Crosstown Classic exhibition game at Wrigley Field. This 9 minute video features Harry Caray’s pre-game interview with MJ followed by each of his at-bats and key plays. Michael was humbled by playing [...]

Bradley Gone Despite Budget Cuts at Newspaper
I bet Milton Bradley would have preferred Bruce Miles would have just stayed home.
Earlier this season, management at the Daily Herald decided to stop/limit their Cubs beat writer, Bruce Miles, from travelling with the team. Newspapers are under pressure to cut costs, but when coverage is affected, I think really calls into question a paper’s ability [...]

Talking Baseball radio with Bruce Levine
ESPN AM1000Â in Chicago has probably the best baseball radio show going: “Talkin’ Baseball” with Bruce Levine and now co-hosted by Dave Juday. Levine is in my view one of the most insightful and informed members of the Cubs media contingent. I think he sees and more importantly tells more than most baseball reporters. The show [...]

On the Cubs beat with Bruce Miles
Possibly one of the great jobs to have is that of beat writer for a major league baseball team. Free tickets, great seats, access to all aspects of the game… my view from the cheap seats (i.e. as a blogger) is being a beat writer is a great gig to have. That may well be, but of [...]

In the third and final installment of our exclusive interview with Pat Hughes, the Voice of the Chicago Cubs, we cover a range of topics. The first clip begins with Pat’s favorite visitor to the broadcast booth: Jimmy Buffett. Then he goes into keeping the broadcast interesting in spite of the many bad teams he’s [...]

The Pat Hughes Interview – part 2
Pat Hughes, the Voice of the Chicago Cubs, visited with CubHub.net for an exclusive interview just prior to reporting for Spring Training 2009. Pat was kind enough to discuss his Baseball Voices CD series on the great announcers of major league baseball.
In part two, Pat discusses the teams he followed as a youth in Northern [...]
